Titleist accomplished what they were trying to do. They made the AP2 irons more forgiving then the 710s and they still have great performance. The club face is a little larger than the 710s but still provides playability. Feels like butter when hit well. Geat irons for a wide range of handicaps. Titleist does not disappoint. Rory McIlroy Add the 712 MB to His Bag
You'll have to wait about four months to try Titleist's new 712 Series irons, but pros at the AT&T National are getting their first chance to hit the new AP1, AP2, CB and MB irons this week. (Photos below; Titleist uses 700 numbers for irons, and the 12 indicates the model year.)
So impressed was US Open champion Rory McIlroy with the new 712 Series Titleist MB irons that he put them straight into his bag for last week's Dunhill Links Championship and almost won the tournament. He only lost out to fellow Titleist ambassador Michael Hoey on St Andrew's famed final green.
The new irons, a prototype of which was also used by Rickie Fowler at The Open Championship, will be available to club golfers from November 18.
Titleist says both the MB and CB forged irons, also out in November, feature improved looks feel and performance and build on the classic designs of their 710 Series predecessors.
He would soon take the new irons out to the course for further testing, along with his new Vokey Design Spin Milled 4 (SM4) wedges.
A couple days later, Rory arrived at Kingsbarns for Round 1 with both the new MB irons and SM4 wedges in the bag, ready for action.
He would go on to shoot rounds of 70-67-66-65 for a 20-under total and finish second in the Dunhill Links. At the Koren Open the following week, Rory shot a tournament-best 6-under 64 in the final round to rally for another runner-up finish.
And last Sunday in China, Rory got up-and-down from a greenside bunker on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the Shanghai Masters and cap a spectacular opening month for his new Titleist equipment.
For the majority of 2011, Rory gamed Titleist MB irons with Project X 6.5 shafts.
But during the fitting session in Scotland, Titleist Tour Technician Mattias Jelvernoticed that Rory was swinging harder and faster than ever, a result of the U.S. Open champ's escalated fitness regimen.
Accordingly, Mattias suggested Rory test a stronger version of his current shaft in the new MB irons, moving from the Project X 6.5 to Project X 7.0.
Rory said he really liked the look and feel of the new MB irons. The Project X 7.0 shafts only gave him more confidence, resulting in a stronger ball flight with slightly reduced spin. The data on the computer showed an increase of 2-3 mph in ball speed and five yards of added distance with each iron.

Over the last few weeks, the Titleist Tour Department has been focused on building these iron sets to the custom specifications of our Titleist Brand Ambassadors.
This week at AT&T, members of the Titleist Leadership and R&D teams will begin working with our players to show, explain, fit and test the new irons, a process that will continue over the coming weeks across the worldwide professional tours. The feedback we receive during this validation process influences the design and specifications of the Titleist products available in golf shops around the world.

You'll have to wait about four months to try Titleist's new 712 Series irons, but pros at the AT&T National are getting their first chance to hit the new AP1, AP2, CB and MB irons this week.
While the heads of the new AP1 irons are the same size as their predecessors, their most significant new feature is a progressive blade length.

Bill Haas Is the Winner
After three playoff holes, Bill Haas has won the 2011 Tour Championship by defeating Hunter Mahan, winning the 2011 FedEx Cup in the process. By winning the duel titles, Haas has more than doubled his career earnings, taking home $10 million for winning the FedEx Cup playoffs and $1.44 million for winning the Tour Championship.
The highlight of the playoff (and perhaps the shot of the year) was Haas' pitch shot out of a lake and over a large hill, which he knocked within three feet of the pin. This came on the second playoff hole, where Haas and Mahan both made par. On the final playoff hole, Haas made an impressive par after a poor tee shot, while Mahan conceded after failing to hole out in three shots on the Par 3.
Haas has had a great year, making the cut in all four majors and going to a playoff in two other tournaments, but failed to win a tournament this season until the last one of the year. This was the third win of his career, and by far the largest paycheck.
BILL HAAS: Yeah, this is very unexpected, I guess. I thought I was playing well. Last week I had a terrible finish on Sunday, a terrible back nine, and tried not to let that get me down. Just tried to tell myself try and put yourself in that same situation and try to prove to yourself that you can handle it. Even with all that said, I bogeyed two of the last three. Fortunately I made some birdies and was able to do that. Just tried to get in that moment more often. It just happened, I don't know.
I played with Luke Donald, and he birdied the last, and I thought that won the FedEx Cup for him, so afterwards I told him, I said, congratulations, I hope that won it for you, I just hope maybe I can win this tournament. That was kind of how it happened.
Fortunate to get in a playoff. It was my third one this year, I was 0 for 2 coming into this one. I told myself it's not over until it's over. You never know what can happen. I could hole this chip, anything can happen. And I did. It was somewhat of a learning experience for me because anything did happen.
Hunter played great. Hunter did everything he was supposed to do on 17, I just got very fortunate and pulled off a great shot that might not happen every time. Things just happened for me even though I thought the other side of it last week when I know it doesn't happen for you.

Building upon the high technology design and resounding success of the original AP irons, Titleist AP1 712 Irons introduces the new high performance AP1 irons for avid golfers. The Titleist AP1 are multi-material, dual cavity irons that take the design mission of "Advanced Performance You Can Feel" to new heights.
The concept for the original Advanced Performance irons arose as a result of research that indicated serious golfers want performance with great feel, not performance at the expense of feel. The Titleist R&D team advanced research group has been conducting extensive sound and vibration analysis aimed at reducing the harsh lower frequency vibration that causes poor feel in irons. This research led to combining several technologies and materials in the back cavity of the new AP irons resulting in a new Tuned Feel System to take feel to a new level.
The new Tuned Feel System is a co-molded medallion of soft elastomer and aluminum plate. This insert has been specifically designed to improve the sound and feel of each new iron. For the thinner face, larger cavity AP1 a hotter, more lively feel has been enhanced.

The length of the shorter irons in the new Titleist 712 AP1 Irons have been progressively reduced to ensure the classic look of the iron is retained. Titleist is also promising higher ball speeds on miss-hits through the improved technology within the steel head.
The stock shaft of the new Titleist 712 AP1 Irons is the True temper Dynamic Gold XP. The stock graphite shaft is the Tour AD by Graphite Design. The stock grip is the Titleist Tour Velvet by Golf Pride.
The Titleist AP1 712 irons feature two tungsten weights in the sole of the club that increases the MOI of the Titleist 712 AP1 Irons without having to make the head longer. This means that it is very forgiving for its size and Titleist say the shot disperson is smaller than the previous AP1 model. Certainly we found it to be very easy to hit and pretty forgiving, even if the trajectory was a little higher than the similar sized CB iron.
At address the heads look a little more compact and the topline appears thinner, but it actually is the same size, but looks smaller thanks to some extra polishing and visual tweaking. The sweet spot is not as big as the AP2s as yoiu would expect but the offset is smaller and this is an iron ideally suited to the low handicap player. Titleist are quietly confident that the AP1 will outsell the AP2 and with the 712 version of the Titliest AP1 iron we would have to say it has every chance with single figure golfers.
